Tackling holiday leftovers: decor, trash and more

The holiday season brings joy, laughter, and maybe a little too much eggnog. But when the festivities wind down and you’re staring at a Mount Everest of holiday leftovers—wrapping paper scraps, glittery garland, and enough Amazon boxes to build a life-size gingerbread house—you’re left wondering: what now?

You could try cramming it all into your garbage can and hope the local raccoons don’t throw a New Year’s bash on your curb. Or you could do what we at Up Up and Away Junk Hauling like to call “the responsible adult thing.” (No promises that it’s as fun as the raccoon party, though!) Let’s talk trash!

Wrapping Paper, Boxes, and Other Gift-Related Junk

Holiday gift-giving leaves behind piles of wrapping paper, gift bags, and boxes that somehow multiply overnight. Here’s how to deal with them without losing your holiday spirit:

  • Recycle What You Can: Most wrapping paper is recyclable—as long as it’s free from glitter, foil, or plastic. Flatten those cardboard boxes and toss them into the recycling bin.
  • Reuse for Next Year: Keep undamaged gift bags, bows, and tissue paper for future use. Trust us, your future self will high-five you for saving money. (Also, sorry, Mom, for making fun of your “bag full of bags” all those years.)
  • Dispose of Non-Recyclables Thoughtfully: Glitter paper, foil wrap, and ribbons are the recycling bin’s arch-nemeses. Bag them separately, and don’t try to sneak them into the recycling truck—they know.

Holiday Décor

Not all holiday decorations survive the season (RIP, shattered ELF snow globe). Here’s how to deal with the survivors—and the not-so-lucky ones:

  • Donate Usable Décor: Got extra ornaments that no longer spark joy, or a wreath that didn’t make the cut? Donate them to thrift stores or charities (may be a good idea to call first – some charities don’t accept decorations after the holidays!). Someone else’s Pinterest board is waiting for them.
  • Recycle Where Possible: Check if your local recycling center accepts string lights or artificial trees. (Pro tip: If your lights stopped working this year, it’s not “bad luck”—it’s physics and tangled wires.)
  • Dispose Responsibly: For broken ornaments, tinsel explosions, or giant inflatables that have seen better days, call in the pros (that’s us!) to haul it away.
