The 4 core values that drive our business and allow us to be the H.E.R.O. for our clients.

Every business has core values. Whether those values are posted on the wall, talked about in interviews, or simply lived out day to day, core values are the underlying priorities and principals that guide businesses, teams, and even families towards their goals. At Up Up and Away, our goal is to glorify God and improve the lives of everyone we come in contact with. In order to do this, we talk about our values about from day one. In every interview, we go over our core values. We talk about them weekly. When things get difficult, our core values remind us how to best move forward. When someone does an exceptional job we congratulate them on being an excellent H.E.R.O. These values are the main thing that sets us apart from the competition. In this post I will break down our 4 core values, what they mean, and how they impact both our team and our customers.

Our team of H.E.R.O.’s are Hardworking, Encouraging, Reliable, and Open-handed. Let’s talk about that.

Hard work

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters.”
Colossians 3:23

What we always say is that if our job was easy, we would not have a job. Our whole business is centered around doing the hard, heavy, and dirty work so that our clients do not have to. Simply enough, we can not do our jobs well if we do not work hard. We go above and beyond to make sure that we always give 100% effort in every job, whether it is a quick and easy job or a grueling, gross monster project.

On our team, it is important to work hard to support your other team members. There is nothing worse than being on a truck with someone who does not pull their weight, constantly needs a break, or spends all their time on their phone. When we exemplify hard work, our team morale is boosted, we are more efficient, and our team has a better day in and day out work experience.

We also believe that our clients time is valuable. We understand that they have to take time out of their day to allow us into their homes to work. Understanding this, it is important that we work hard to be respectful and appreciative of their time. Every time a client mentions that they can’t believe how fast we worked, we get excited because that means we are living up to the standard of hard work that we have set for ourselves.

Encouragement

“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Ephesians 4:29

We realize that our job gives us a unique opportunity that not many other professions have. We spend all day with our team riding around in the truck as we go between clients houses and job sites. We are not tethered to a computer or hidden behind a screen which gives us a lot of opportunity to influence those around us. We firmly believe that all of the time we spend with our clients and with our coworkers is valuable and should be used to encourage everyone we are around. This is why encouragement is our second core value.

Blue collar work is notoriously a difficult working environment. People can sometimes be crass, rude, or condescending. We want to leverage all of the time our team members spend together to do the opposite, encourage. Going to work each day with people you like and respect makes it so much easier to do a good job. While we do not expect everyone on our team to be best friends, we do focus on being encouraging, positive, and helpful to each other. Of course we still joke around with each other and maybe even tease from time to time, but we are careful to keep it lighthearted and fun for all parties.

We also understand that many of our clients call us at a time of life transition. Moving to a new city, downsizing, helping your parents as they move into assisted living, or even cleaning out after the death of a loved one are all difficult and emotional processes. We are sensitive to that and so we work hard to be the bright spot of each of our clients days. Anyone can haul junk, but not everyone can make your day better while they do it. That is why encouragement is one of our four core values.

Reliable

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.”
Luke 16:10

Reliability is one of the most common complaints customers have about home services providers. Four to Eight hour time windows, no shows, no call backs, and services offered not matching services rendered are all common complaints for home service companies. We work hard to be reliable, over-communicate, and do exactly what our customer requested. We offer white collar service in a blue collar industry.

When a client calls Up Up and Away they can expect to talk to a team member who takes notes on the details of their projects, gathers notes and photos, sends an estimate and schedules the project. Clients can expect to receive appointment reminders, ETA text messages and immediate updates if we expect to be more than five minutes later than the appointment time. We have invested in training, team members, and technology to make sure that we always deliver reliably for our clients.

Our team members also strive to be reliable for each other. When we say we will do something, we know we can trust that it will be taken care of. That allows us to be efficient and to work together smoothly. Reliability also means that our team works hard to show up on time, every time. We can do a better job for our clients when we can rely on our teammates to have our backs.

Open-Handedness

“Remember this: whoever sows sparingly will reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will reap generously.”
Corinthians 9:6

Open-handedness is a fancy way of saying service. We believe that going above and beyond for our clients, our team, and our community is what it takes to be the best home service company around. In each interview, we discuss the fact that sometimes our clients will need an extra hand with something, and as much as we can, our answer is ‘We are happy to help with that’.

At Up Up and Away, we set aside time to help local community organizations with labor and transportation needs. We also set aside profits to be able to pay our team members to help these community service organizations so that they do not have to sacrifice their personal pay in order to volunteer. We also do whatever we can do to help our team members whenever they need a truck or some help to move items for themselves or their family.

We also reserve some profits to be able to help customers who are in difficult situations and need a hand. While we can’t cut everyone a deal, we try to make sure we do for one what we wish we could do for all. We are so thankful to our community and clients for all of their support that allows us to support our families and so we want to give back whenever we can.

Summary

Our core values are the underlying motivators that help our team to be the best junk hauling team in North Metro Atlanta. We are so thankful to our awesome team who works hard to exemplify these values, our clients who allow us to help them, and our community who helps us run our business and give back!
