300,000 things and counting

As you can imagine, we see a lot of junk in our line of work. In fact, we’ve helped over 2,000 clients tackle clutter this year alone. One truth we’ve learned? Clutter isn’t just emotional or physical—it’s also a hidden drain on finances. Whether it’s paying for storage, managing upkeep on rarely-used items, or the stress of an overcrowded space, these things add up in ways that aren’t always obvious.

A recent article from Becoming Minimalist highlighted some surprising stats: the average U.S. household has around 300,000 items, and nearly one in ten Americans spends money on extra storage. That’s a huge number of things to manage and maintain. Imagine the freedom (and the savings!) if there were fewer things to organize or pay for. Maybe that larger home – or storage unit – isn’t necessary after all! Picture that space cleared of unnecessary items, open and organized, with more room for what truly matters.

A lot of the issue lies in the habit of over-consumption as a society. I tend to struggle to press pause before purchasing something I think will bring me a false sense of contentment. Over time I’ve found working through some version of the following questions helps me think through the true cost of swiping my card:

  1. Pause Before Purchasing: Take a day or two to decide if the item is really needed, especially if it’s non-essential. (how many “perfect size and shape” mugs do I actually need?)
  2. Consider Storage: Think about where the item will go and if it’ll just add to the space problem. (and no, that spare closet doesn’t count as that item’s “new home.”)
  3. Prioritize Quality Over Quantity: Invest in durable items that will actually be used and enjoyed. (I love the Target dollar spot as much as the next person, but…)

When these habits of pausing, considering, and prioritizing are exercised, lasting changes that save space, money and stress become second nature.
