How to make sure you have an awesome experience getting rid of junk.

Making the decision to hire any company requires a little bit of a leap of faith. Is their product as good as they say it is? Can I trust that their service is reliable? Will hiring this person actually solve my problem? In addition to the issues of quality, there are some other factors to consider when hiring a junk removal company to remove unwanted items from your house. The company you hire will be coming in your home, around your kids and valuables, moving heavy stuff around tight corners and staircases. While on the surface it seems like a simple, low risk decision, in reality there is a lot to consider about hiring a junk removal company. In my years of experience hauling junk around Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth and Metro Atlanta, there are 6 things that consumers should know about a junk removal company before they hire them. Let’s discuss them.

1) Background Checks

Background checks are the most important thing to consider when hiring a junk removal company. In many cases the crew that you hire will have unrestricted access to most parts of your home. Your valuables, your kids, information about your family, and more are all available to the people you invite into your home. We have all heard horror stories of home service technicians stealing something, not being who they say they are, or casing a house to come back later and steal from it. For that reason is it critically important that you make sure every employee of any company you hire has a clean background check on file. Some small companies will say that they do not need background checks because their two helpers are their friends that they have known all their life. In my company, even my family members who work for me submit to background tests so that my clients can know for certain that they are protected.

2) Drug Tests

Equally as important as background checks are drug tests. While these two things go hand in hand, there are a few things that differentiate the importance of background checks and drug tests. While background checks protect the things and people inside your home, drug tests primarily protect the outside of your home and the overall customer experience. Of course there are occasions that someone on drugs may be dangerous to a person, but someone with that level of addiction is unlikely to make it through even the most relaxed hiring process.

The benefit of drug tests are most overtly seen in that fact that junk removal company employees operate heavy trucks and sometimes machinery on your personal property. When those large trucks and machines are being backed in, moved around, and loaded on your property, it is imperative that the person operating them as well as the person spotting the operator are 100% focused on safety at all times. It is impossible to be safe if drugs are a factor. Additionally, if someone even occasionally uses any sort of drug, they will not be a reliable employee in regards to work ethic, reliability, and demeanor. For these reasons, it is critical that any company you hire drug test all of their employees

3) Proper Insurance

Even with high quality, background checked, and drug tested team members, accidents can still happen. Junk hauling is a profession that inherently carries risk. From maneuvering heavy equipment and trucks in tight spaces to moving heavy objects down tight staircases, there are plenty of opportunities for things to go wrong. While any good company will have good training in place to mitigate the risk of accidents, they should also be prepared for the worst. That is why it is critical to make sure any junk removal company that you hire carries full general liability and workers compensation policies. These insurance policies protect the customer in the event that something does go wrong. This is something I talk with potential customers about a lot due to the rise of one man junk hauling operations in the past two years. Many of these small companies do not carry proper insurance or they only carry a ghost policy. A ghost policy will allow you to generate a certificate of insurance, but when you read the certificate it is clear that the policy does not cover almost anything. In order to make sure you are protected, make sure you ask any company you hire about their insurance. Do not feel bad asking for a certificate of insurance, any legitimate company would be happy to provide you one.

4) Reviews

In this day and age, reviews are everything. Restaurants were the first to make it or break it based on reviews but now home service companies have the same level of weight placed on their reviews. While anyone can gather a few dozen reviews from happy customers, I always recommend that consumers look for junk removal companies that have one hundred or more reviews. Not only does this give the customer a good picture of the quality of the company, but it also lets the customer know that a company cares enough about their customers to go out of their way to collect their feedback. When you see a company with over one hundred reviews, it means they have a system by which they collect reviews which means they also have a system to make sure customers are happy with their work. Those are the kind of companies worth doing business with.

5) Availability

If your project can not be completed on your time table, why even call? Many people call a junk removal company because they have a significant amount of unwanted items piled up somewhere on their property. There is no reason that pile should have to remain for two weeks or longer because a company is busy. Expedient service is critical to all home services, but especially to the junk removal industry. If a company does not have availability for a standard one truck or less pick up for more than 10 days, move on. An added bonus to making sure a junk removal company can handle your project on your time frame is if they have a link to their scheduling calendar on their website. It will show what times they have available and when they could be at your house to handle your project. For a good example of this, check out our scheduling engine by clicking HERE.

6) Professionalism

At the end of the day, anyone can start a junk removal company. Buying trucks, finding good crews, gathering reviews, and being available in a timely manner are all doable. Combining these elements together into a well functioning business, however, takes professionalism. Here are a few things to consider when trying to make sure you hire a professional company. Is their equipment clean and in good condition? Do all of their team members wear uniforms? Do they sound happy and helpful on the phone? Do they respond to email, texts, and online bookings quickly? If they are doing these things, it is a safe bet that they have a team of professionals working hard to serve you.

In conclusion

Hiring a junk removal company is a great benefit to many people trying to clean out their property, but there are some common pitfalls to watch out for. Making sure that the company you hire has the right procedures and policies in place is critical to making sure that you have a good experience. Once you find a company that works well for you, make sure you save their number because good help is hard to find!
